The Pirate Bay was hacked!! As you can read in the excerpt from their blog, the user database was copied via a security hole in in the blog itself.
Get the word straight from the horses mouth:
SOURCE: TBP Hacked
User data stolen but not unsecuredHi, we have some sad news, but don’t be alarmed…
Some people (and yes, we know who) found a security hole on our web site (in fact, actually in this blog).
They have got a copy of the user database. That is, your username and passwords. But, the passwords are stored encrypted, so it’s not a big deal, but it’s still very sad that it’s out there. All e-mails are for instance encrypted as well, they will most likely not be able to decrypt them either (they are _very_ encrypted).
We encourage all our users to change passwords as soon as possible – and if you have the same password on the bay as other places, you should update them as well.
Sorry for the mess, but we are all human and we miss something sometimes.

So it looks like all is not lost.
However, as a note of caution, whenever you sign up for any web based service don’t use information that can be linked to who you are in meatspace.
Some simple tricks to keep you seperate from U are: Keep at least 10 disposable, as in you can delete it and not care that it got deleted, email accounts all based on fake information. Also, don’t use a static IP address. To keep you IP anonymous, try using JAP or TOR or at least a anonymous proxy. Most importantly, always scan downloads for viri and other assorted malware BEFORE you open them and make sure the md5 sig hashes check out. You can also use a Virtual Machine as a secure way to test out software before loading anything on your real system. A simple way to do this is to use Sandboxie which will set up a secure environment for you.
Keep hacking, but be as secure as possible.
Remember, its the little human errors that cause security holes to be left open and exploited so try not to be human 😉
