JK Rowling Outs Dumbledore [the fictional book character] as Gay

20 10 2007

A shock to some, a confirmed interpretation for others, this isn’t fan fiction. This is a candid revelation about JK Rowling’s writing process and prowess:

BBC NEWS | Entertainment | JK Rowling outs Dumbledore as gay
She took audience questions and was asked if Dumbledore found “true love”.

“Dumbledore is gay,” she said, adding he was smitten with rival Gellert Grindelwald, who he beat in a battle between good and bad wizards long ago.

The audience gasped, then applauded. “I would have told you earlier if I knew it would make you so happy,” she said.

“Falling in love can blind us to an extent,” she added, saying Dumbledore was “horribly, terribly let down” and his love for Grindelwald was his “great tragedy”

I applaud JK’s decision to reveal this intriguing tid bit about Dumbledore’s backstory. I do so, not just because it will piss off the religious right even more about the Potter books, but because its a real achievement for Rowling as an artist.

Most artists want their work to “say” or mean something in particular, but the exact message or subtext of any work is left up to the interpreter or reader. In fact, it is often said, once an artist reveals a work to the public, the exact meaning of that work is out of the artists hands.

In this case JK Rowling created a homosexual character that never reveals his sexual preference throughout the course of SEVEN books. Obviously, in light of the quotes from the BBC article, this was a tool for herself to be able to write Dumbledore with some mysterious weight in his heart. The accomplishment is that the big Harry Potter fan sites picked up on this infinitesimal facet of Dubledore as a written character.

My conclusion, is that this revelation is not some contrived controversy based on a society that is largely intolerant of homosexuals. This revelation is merely a fact about Dumbledore’s character that JK Rowling, up until recently, kept tucked away in her head. A fact that was communicated to many Harry Potter readers via a dynamic, palpable world and society.  A world and society that Rowling created with nothing but her mind and a word processor.

Well done JK!!

California Community Says Companies Are Not People

7 09 2007

Common Sense Prevails Against All Odds!!!

Source AlterNet (please read the WHOLE article)
In 2006, Humboldt County, California, became the latest, and largest, jurisdiction to abolish the legal doctrine known as “corporate personhood.”

Measure T [The Referendum’s Legal-speak Name] was successful because our all-volunteer campaign came together to pass a law that bans non-local corporations from participating in Humboldt elections. The referendum, which passed with 55 percent of the vote, also asserts that corporations cannot claim the First Amendment right to free speech.

By enacting Measure T, Humboldt County has committed an act of “municipal civil disobedience,” intentionally challenging “settled law.” But voters also recognize that Measure T is an act of common sense.

The gears of the American Legal system may work slowly, but they are still in fact working.   Three cheers for the people of Humboldt County!!

This is living proof that governments should be afraid of their people.  Now all we need is for the rest of America to wake up and use common sense.

Keep fighting that good fight!

Luciano Pavarotti Dies At Age 71

6 09 2007

The world morns for a great voice that has been eternally silenced.

Hundreds of people gathered Thursday night in Modenas main piazza to pay final respects to Luciano Pavarotti, whose vibrant high Cs and ebullient showmanship made him the most beloved and celebrated tenor since Caruso.Pavarotti had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year and underwent further treatment in August 2007.

If you don’t happen to understand the pain of such a loss to supporters of the Arts, then I suggest you find a copy of Pavarotti’s rendition of Nessun Dorma.

Rest in peace Luciano.  You will be remembered, and you will be remembered well.

Pirate Party of the United States announces registration in Utah!!

9 08 2007

In an astonishing turn of events The Pirate Party of the United States is finally opening up registration in the state of Utah.  I never thought I’d see the day come where the American people might be able to catch up to the modern ideals of Sweden’s Piratpartiet*!!

Straight from the horses mouth:

PRESS RELEASE – PPUS announces registration in Utah

The Pirate Party of the United States announces it is now accepting statements of support in the State of Utah. These statements are the first step in the registration of the Pirate Party as a political body in the State of Utah.

[…] “We feel that Utah is an ideal state to begin registration of the Pirate Party as a political body,” says Andrew Norton, spokesperson for the Pirate Party of the US. “Utah has a strong history of political diversity, and technological progress.”

[…] The Pirate Party of Utah, as the state party will be known, has until early February 2008 to return the 2000 signatures of registered voters it needs.

If you don’t know anything about the PPUS, or any of the Pirate Parties around the world, do not be fooled by the word “Pirate”.  This movement is not all about downloading music or movies.  The PPUS is a burgeoning political party, like the Democrats, Republicans and Libertarians are political parties.  As of yet, the PPUS is not officially recognized by any state or federal government in the US.  In a country where most recognized political parties are only concerned with winning elections, the PPUS would be a breath of fresh air.  The PPUS focuses on issues that concern privacy and freedom in cyberspace, as well as general civil liberties in meatspace.    Here is an excerpt from their preamble:

Washington tries to govern [the society of the internet], yet they know nothing of it. They do not know the values we hold dear, nor do they know anything about the vast and deep culture that has formed. These politicians continue to pass laws and impose their thoughtless will on our society with no one to speak out on our behalf. Lobbyists claim to tell politicians what the American people want, what is good for the American people.

Why do we let these lobbyists control our great country? Why do we let these crooked politicians in Washington be persuaded by those who only care about profit margins and earnings reports? Fixing this may seem impossible, and for one individual to attempt it alone is impossible.

However, at its deepest roots the United States is still democratic. It is time for the members of the Internet community to let their voices be heard in Washington. No longer will we be idle, and watch as our community goes without representation in the United States of America.

Rather well written I think, especially if you remember the “Series of Tubes” speech that Ted Stevens gave while simultaneously trying to stop the Net Neutrality act and exposes his complete ignorance of anything regarding the internet.

If you would like to learn more about the PPUS and the issues that they are fighting for, follow this link to their page that pretty much explains what they are all about.

Hopefully they can dodge the Bush administrations politics of fear long enough to garner enough signatures in time to become officially recognized.

If you’re thinking, “WTF?!?” or “Why?”,  then I’ll just point you to the words of Benjamin Franklin, “Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.”

If your interest is peaked, then go ahead and register on their website, it don’t cost a thing.

I’ll keep you updated on their progress.
