May 14th Is FBI Internet Wiretap Day!!

13 05 2007

Happy Friggin Monday … NOT

Hai 2 U Americans. Get your privacy apps and proxies ready, cause the FBI will have all their gear set up by Monday May 14th:

May 14th is the official deadline for cable modem companies, DSL providers, broadband over powerline, satellite internet companies and some universities to finish wiring up their networks with FBI-friendly surveillance gear, to comply with the FCC’s expanded interpretation of the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act.

Isn’t that special? Oh well, its not like “they” weren’t listening in the whole time anyway. Only now, its all legal thanks to a bill, aka CALEA, passed by Congress in ’94 to help expedite the process of phone/cellular wiretapping, which was expanded to wiretapping the net in June of 2006. Unfortunately, we can’t just blame G W Bush for all this crap.  Darn.

However, fear not! An IP address does not represent a person. They are easy to change and easy to spoof. So, whatever they might “hear” could be coming from anywhere or from anyone. Also, this bill merely expedites the process of getting the authority for wiretapping, it does not give anyone carte blanche to just go around logging data whenever and wherever they want.

Just in case you may want to keep you privacy on principle, the good anonymity tools to use are TOR and JAP, and if you’re really concerned about privacy you can pay for a VPN to Rellaks.

If you have any questions about what this all means, go HERE where the EFF explains it all in fine detail.

Um, try to enjoy your day without punching the next republican you see, while screaming “Land of the free they call it!”

EXTREMELY GRAPHIC VIDEO: Teenage Girl Stoned To Death For Honor?!?

7 05 2007

This report from aina.org, translates an account of this story: Video Captures Stoning of Kurdish Teenage Girl, that first appeared on Jebar.info.

Excerpt:

Mosul, Iraq — According to the Kurdish website Jebar.info up to 1000 men from the Yezidi Kurdish community of Mosul killed a teenager who’s only crime was running away to marry a Muslim man whom she loved and converting to his religion. For four months the girl had been given shelter by a local Muslim Sheik. It was reported that in the last few days her family persuaded her to return home, convincing her that she had been forgiven by her parents and relatives for her mistake.

In a short mobile video clip which appears to have been taken by locals at seen of the murder, the girl is seen being ambushed on her way home by a group of up to 1000 men who were waiting for her to return; the men killed her in the most brutal way possible, by throwing large stones on her head. The following clips show that while she is alive and crying for help she is taunted and kicked in her stomach until someone finishes her off by throwing a large stone on her face.

In my opinion it doesn’t get much more disgusting and depressing than that. The depths to which human kind can sink are greater and more awful than anyone could every possibly imagine. Oxymoronic titled “honor killings” like these are perhaps the worst affront to peace, love and true honor that anyone could ever perpetrate on another human being. After the murders in Virginia, one starts to wonder at just what the hell is wrong with the world. Not even Mark Twain’s quote “When we remember we are all mad, the mysteries disappear and life stands explained.” can explain acts like this.

I am posting the videos for download in their original version. There are six in total and all are in the “.3gp” format. I zipped them all together with 7zip for a faster easier download: DOWNLOAD VIDEOS

I’m not going to post this for viewing on this page, or a freehost site. It just seems wrong. The only reason I posted the videos for download, is because I do not believe in censoring any information on the net. I do however think that posting the videos to dailymotion would sadistic.

I can only hope that by exposing incidents like these, that maybe someone will be averse to joining one of these murderous mobs.

Suprise: Fox News Purposefully Misquotes Obama On US Troops In Iraq

5 05 2007

Thanks to the peeps over at SpinnWebe, we have yet another example of Fox “Faux” News’ Right Wing bias and general craptasticness.

See for yourself:

April 1, speaking about the current conflict between the Senate and the President over war funding, Barack Obama says this (from USA Today):

“I think that nobody wants to play chicken with our troops on the ground,” said Obama. “I do think a majority of the Senate has now expressed the belief that we need to change course in Iraq.”

Yesterday, this graphic comes up on Fox:

Does anyone else want to vomit with anger?

Huge props to SpinnWebe for catching this.  It just goes to show you that Fox News cannot be trusted to follow a story with any amount of credibility or honesty.  “Fair and Balanced” indeed.  There should be some sort of regulatory service for news outlets that could somehow shame or take disciplinary action against media moguls like Fox News.  Of course, free speech applies to these fuckers just like it applies to me, but fuckin A this shit is getting ridiculous.

People trust news outlets to give them the truth, even though they shouldn’t, and that trust is being abused to the extreme.  Maybe Jon Stewart could get rid of Fox News alltogether, he did it for “Crossfire”.  Man I love that clip: CLICKY.  Anyway, we’re probably just SOL and JWF as far as getting rid of Fox News all-together.

With Rupert Murdoch looking into buying the Wall Street Journal, this only makes me more averse to following the main stream media.  Not that I ever put much credence in them to start with.

In short, fuck those guys!

And GO SpinnWebe GO!!

Google Web History: Useful Tool or Big Brother Attack on Privacy?

20 04 2007

The folks over at bizsolutionsplus have something to say about the new service Web History and not much of it is good.  The title of the post itself invokes some fear.

The BSP blog has this to say in the post: Beware! You’re Being Googled

Although the service is password protected for subscribers only, does anyone believe that the Government won’t crack into this service, and that while they may be looking for bad guys, governments, including ours, don’t have a good track record when it comes to playing by the rules. And how about those hackers who will come up with ways not only to get this information, but to use it in ways that can’t be good?

According to Google though, this is just a great new tool so that you can keep track of yourself and do all sorts of fun things like track your own use of the web etc etc blah blah its great whatever.  However, even the cNet Tech New Blog is a bit apprehensive about this new Google feature in their post titled “Your Web history, courtesy of Google“:

Google’s announced acquisition of DoubleClick has raised considerable concern among privacy advocates, who argue that combining the search engine giant with a major online advertising firm puts too much information in the hands of one company. The launch of Google’s new Web History product should send those fears into overdrive.

So far all I see is speculation and no real action on how to exploit this new feature.  I dunno if the gov’t would really force its way into your online life, especially if you are a good little user, but in this administration anything’s possible.  I mean this blog has been scanned by the not so super secret Echelon machines, but no action has been taken on their part.  I’m still posting!

As for hackers, you’d have to have someone’s logon info to be able to see the feature.  So, that leaves the good old Phishing pages, a la this post of mine, that collect your info and leave your account open to be poked and prodded for all kinds of info, including this new Web History feature.

Here’s what I think, its no more of a problem than the exploits and search logging that already exists.  My advice would be to NOT sign up for the feature, or sign up for it then immediately delete the service, and keep an eye out for phishing pages.  If you’re smarter than the average bear, this shouldn’t be a problem.  Also note, remember the big scare about search engines logging your searches and the information leeks on the server side about searches? There was some old lady that had all her info lost by Yahoo (I’ll have to look for the old story).  That threat to your privacy is still there, but there’s not too much you can do about that unless you want to do a bit of work or pay for a proxy service.

If you are really worried about your privacy then you may want to check out the free services offered by TOR or JAP, although both those services are having some problems.

For now, remain calm and don’t use static IP’s or don’t bother doing anything at all cause if someone really REALLY wants your ass there is always a way to get your ass.  Sorry, but its a simple net fact.  Every time you put something out there on the net, it gets cached by Google or some other net company, and once its on the net its somewhere waiting to be found forever.

But never fear, there are ways to keep a modicum of anonimity on the net.  I’ll post an article about how to maintain anonymity on the net soon so you can be all stealthy and kewl.

Last but not least, just don’t do anything stupid, aka illegal or just plain careless, and you should be fine…ish ;)
